IDAHOBIT - The International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia
May 17 every year is IDAHOBIT, the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia. My that’s a mouthful - and indeed it has grown in both its name and meaning… this year is more important than ever. Originally IDAHO, its importance and name has grown to include Trans and Biphobia - this means it truly reflects the challenges faced by all LGBTQ+ people around the world.
IDAHOBIT is a day to draw attention to the discrimination experienced by LGBTQ+ people internationally. The date is chosen to mark 17th May 1990 when the World Health Organisation removed homosexuality from its list of mental disorders. Only 30 years ago if you were gay you were essentially suffering from a mental illness, luckily this has changed and today we are able to marry, to adopt and live life freely in lots of places without fear. We can also celebrate our sexuality and be our whole selves at work. But not this is not the case every where... 2020 is a difficult year for most, now we are all at home thousands of LGBTQ+ people around the world are stuck in families and accommodation where they cannot escape prejudice. They face exclusion, loneliness and even violence from supposed loved ones, their mental and physical health is at great risk. IDAHOBITs theme this year is "Breaking the Silence” the idea being thousands of us will speak up. We will raise our voices, again tell our stories, and show our lived realities matter! This “noise” should be so loud as to reach all those who cannot speak out, in homes where people are suffering and in countries where it is still illegal. Did you know it is still illegal to be LGBTQ+ in over 70 countries? However on the bright side - IDAHOBIT is celebrated in more than 130 countries around the world and there are many events scheduled, albeit this year virtually! Ultimately, the most important way to celebrate IDAHOBIT is to make sure it doesn’t pass you by, if you are in the LGBTQ+ community or an ally - please show your support! To ensure we succeed in our quest for equality we must work together, play to our strengths and celebrate our differences. Why not pledge your support - it just takes a quick Social Media post on your favourite platform with hashtags #IDAHOBIT #IDAHOBIT2020 #breakingthesilence The Wellness & Fitness Academy are allies for the LGBTQ+ community and specialists in Wellness courses, including Mental Health.
